    Since they act as “chemical sponges”, ion exchange resins are ideally suited for effective removal of contaminants from water and other liquids. This technology offers a number of advantages in industrial water demineralization and softening, wastewater recycling and other water treatment processes-including high water recovery, low volume. Another possible process to creat deionized water is electrodeionization. Demineralization: Any process used to remove minerals from water, however, commonly the term is restricted to ion exchange processes. [1] Ultra pure water: Highly-treated water of high resistivity and no organics; usually used in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical.

    Ion exchange technology is a proven method of producing high purity softened and demineralized water. It is used in most industries that require high purity water. The Ion exchange process involves the exchanging of contaminant ions for Na+ ions in a softening application and H+ and OH- ions in pure water application. Demineralization process is the modern industrial water softening process. By this process the, It can be passible remove of hardness as well as remove of all dissolve salts i.e;. FeCO3, CaCl2. We can also say that demineralization or deionization is the process of removing the dissolved ionized solids from water by ion exchange.

      Ion exchange (IX) and reverse osmosis (RO) can be used to solve some of the same separation needs, and are sometimes even used in combination with one , IX and RO differ in a number of ways that affect their overall suitability and cost-effectiveness for a specific process .   Ion exchange (IX) systems offer one possible solution for demineralization, purification or wastewater-treatment applications. Ion exchange systems facilitate reversible chemical reactions in which the ions targeted for removal are captured electrostatically and replaced by other ions of similar charge.

The process of ion exchange is one of the most utilized techniques in water and wastewater treatment as well as in separation processes as chemical synthesis, medical research, food processing, mining, agriculture, etc.

In the first section of the present chapter the kinetics and thermodynamics of. Ion exchange and membrane processes are becoming used extensively in water and wastewater treatment.

Ion exchange is primarily used for the removal of hardness ions, such as magnesium and calcium, and for water demineralization.

Reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis, both membrane processes, remove dissolved solids from water using membranes. In water processing, ion exchange typically removes hardness in softening applications and all dissolved ions in demineralization.

Ion exchange is also used to remove nitrate, chromate, arsenic, and other specific contaminants from drinking water. Ion exchange processes can be conducted in continuous or batch mode, with most water treatment IX processes run in a continuous mode.
